It’s Platu Eating Time in Samut Songkhram! <º))))><
The “Platu Eating Festival” runs from now through December 21st. This is the best time to chow down on these flavorful fish as they arrive in the Thai Gulf, fat and fertile. This small member of the mackerel family has been a favorite with Thais since ancient times. Usually, the fish is fried (Pla-Tu-Tod) and served with spicy Nam Prik (chili paste), fresh or parboiled vegetables and steamed rice. During this festival, you will see more than 50 dishes made from Platu!!

ช่วงนี้ปลาทูกำลังเติบโตเต็มที่และมาหากินที่ปากอ่าวไทย (อ่าว ก.ไก่) ซึ่งมีอาหารอุดมสมบูรณ์ ปลาทูที่จับได้ในบริเวณปากอ่าวแม่กลอง จึงเป็น “ปลาทูสาว” ซึ่งอุดมไปด้วยคุณค่าทางโภชนาการและมีรสชาติอร่อยจนทำให้ปลาทูแม่กลองมีชื่อเสียงเป็นที่รู้จักกัน เขาเลยจัดเทศกาลกินปลาทูและของดีเมืองแม่กลองกันในช่วงเดือนธันวาคม ณ หน้าศาลากลางจังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม ภายในงานมีการจำหน่ายอาหารที่ทำมาจากปลาทูมากกว่า 50 เมนู เช่น น้ำพริกปลาทู, ปลาทูทอด, ปลาทูต้มส้ม, ปลาทูซาเตี๊ยะ, ตับปลาทูผัดฉ่า, ปลาทูย่างสะเดาน้ำปลาหวาน, ปลาทูต้มมะดัน เป็นต้น ….. ><((((º> แหมๆๆๆๆ น้ำลายสอ เมนูโปรดทั้งนั้นเลยนะเนี่ย
Talad Rom Hoob or Maeklong Train Market
Talad Rom Hoob or Maeklong Train Market is close to the Maeklong Railway Station, in fact, this unique market is RIGHT ON the tracks themselves! Of course, there’s Platu, plus local fresh & dried food all presented on trays or in wicker baskets. When the market is full of people during peak hours, there’s barely enough room to move around. About seven times a day, a train comes down the tracks and chaos ensues. Awnings are taken down, baskets are pulled back, and shouts of warnings fill the air. Moments later, the cries are drowned out when the locomotive storms down the tracks! Seconds later, the awnings are raised again and the produce is brought out once more. We had watched the whole drama on the internet, and I knew I was NOT going to try to photograph it with my fisheye lens.
ตลาดร่มหุบ หรือ ตลาดแม่กลอง มีร้านตั้งขายบริเวณริมทางรถไฟและบนทางรถไฟ รถไฟขบวนที่ผ่านสถานีแม่กลองนี้เป็นสายสั้น จากสถานีมหาชัยถึงสถานีแม่กลอง เมื่อได้ยินเสียงระฆังหรือธงที่โบกสะบัดจากนายสถานี … ทั้งเข่ง กระจาด กระบุง ตะกร้า ถูกนำออก ร่มทุกคันถูกหุบ และจากนั้นก็จัดวางเข้าใหม่อย่างเป็นระเบียบและรวดเร็วภายในพริบตา เรียกได้ว่ามืออาชีพจริงๆ พ่อค้าแม่ขายปฏิบัติกันมาแบบนี้เป็นประจำ จนเป็นเสน่ห์ และความสนุกสนานของบรรดานักท่องเที่ยวนั่นเอง ใครมาไม่ถูกเวลาก็พลาดไป … ดังนั้นตรวจสอบกำหนดเวลาเดินรถไฟสายแม่กลอง- บ้านแหลม กันก่อนเดินทางนะ เขามีเวลาเข้า-ออก ทั้งหมดวันละ ๗ เที่ยว และแน่นอนว่าเมื่อมีโอกาสมาตลาดแม่กลองแล้ว !ห้ามพลาด! อาหารอร่อยติดอันดับนั่นก็คือ ปลาทูหน้างอคอหัก ที่อร่อยที่สุดในฤดูนี้เลย
Prok Pho Ubosot
Wat Bang Kung is famous for its ubosot, called Bot Prok Po, that is completely enclosed within the roots of a banyan tree. This is a very old temple that dates back to the early 17th century, and the tree itself now acts as the main pillar. Without these roots, the chapel would probably fall down! This temple also served as a camp for King Taksin during an attack by the Burmese army in 1768. After the successful campaign ended, the site was abandoned for almost 200 years. This is one of the most interesting ubosots in Thailand, but very difficult to photograph. I went inside to put a gold leaf on the Buddha image and Fon made a photograph of me, almost falling down the slippery marble stairs. You can find that photo on our 180books FaceBook page >>HERE<<
ปัจจุบัน แม่กลองเป็นอำเภอหนึ่งของจังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม ในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา สมเด็จพระเจ้าเอกทัศน์มีพระราชดำรัสสั่งให้หัวเมืองปากใต้ยกกองทัพเรือมาตั้งค่ายสร้างกำแพงล้อมวัดบางกุ้งที่ตำบลบางกุ้ง เมืองสมุทรสงคราม เรียกว่า “ค่ายบางกุ้ง” และเมื่อครั้งสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชทรงสถาปนากรุงธนบุรีเป็นราชธานีแล้ว โปรดให้ชาวจีนรวบรวมสมัครพรรคพวกมาตั้งเป็นกองทหารรักษาค่ายเก่าที่บางกุ้ง จึงเรียกกันอีกชื่อหนึ่งว่า “ค่ายจีนบางกุ้ง” กองทัพพม่ายกทัพมาล้อมบริเวณตำบลบางกุ้ง สมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชทรงทราบจึงทรงยกทัพมาป้องกันจนพม่าพ่ายไป … พระอุโบสถวัดบางกุ้ง ที่เห็นในภาพถ่ายของTHAILAND 180º มีต้นโพธิ์ ต้นไทร ต้นไกร ต้นกร่าง ขึ้นปกคลุมทั้งพระอุโบสถที่ก่ออิฐถือปูน มีปูนปั้นลวดลายพันธุ์พฤกษาประดับด้วยเครื่องถ้วยซึ่งเป็นลักษณะเฉพาะของสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนปลาย ซึ่งชาวบ้านเรียกว่า “โบสถ์ปรกโพธิ์” .. เราเข้าไปไหว้พระ ปิดทอง ในโบสถ์นี้ก่อนออกเดินทางต่อ .. ดูภาพที่ลิ้งค์นี้>>HERE<<
Church of the Virgin Mary
The Church of the Virgin Mary, shown above, was built in 1890 by a French missionary, Father Paulo Salmon, in French Gothic Style. It was built with bricks and the wall was covered by a lime (calcium oxide) mason with some old school ingredients including black clear sugarcane syrup. The stained glass windows were imported from France. Sunday after Mass is probably the best time to see the inside.
Samut Songkhram is less than an hour from Bangkok and the weekend is coming… — Be sure to bring some Platus back for your friends.
