I think many otherwise well-meaning photojournalists and NGOs have done a great disservice to the tourism industry and have perhaps filled people’s minds with a distorted image of India that it is filled with dust, poverty, and beggars. So far we’ve had the opportunity to travel through much of the subcontinent from Kashmir through Kerala and Kolkata through Rajasthan. I’m on a mission to present the other side of this beautiful land filled with spiritual people, and yes, it is quickly modernizing and transforming into a developed country.
My approach to photography probably relates to my background as a glamor and glamor product photographer. I like beautiful places, people, and things, and focus on the bright side of life. I suppose that if photojournalists didn’t win so many awards, and generate so many funds with their photos showing the darker, depressing side of life, their approach might be different too.

None of the photographs were made using a long telephoto lens and hiding while waiting for a moment when they expressed something contrived that I wanted to show. On the contrary! The use of a fisheye lens requires up-front and personal contact. In almost every photo the subject was greeted, and permission to make a photograph was obtained prior to my sticking my lens in their face. This basic respect of a human’s rights and dignity made the portraits more of a collaborative effort. I think that you’ll see and feel this show through as you view this collection and also feel a certain oneness that connects us as human beings engaging in our sometimes mundane daily tasks.

The Hindus believe that cows are a sacred gift from heaven. In exchange for grain and water they give so much back, such as milk, butter, fertilizer, fuel, and they feed on grass to clear fields for planting. Then too, they are gentle, patient animals with soulful eyes. Yes, there are a few surprises in the “180º Faces of India” collection.

As our collection of photos in Black & White grew, I began to experiment with some of the images adding color and various digital effects to isolate the subject from its background and evoke a dreamlike feeling. I’ve given this group of portraits a ‘working title’ of “180º Dreams of India,” and I’m starting to add them to the collection as well. I’ll be adding new photos all the time ~visit the link and Click Follow to Watch it grow!

Dare to dream bigger? Just Look at the display below! Since I created this mock-up exhibit, I’ve hung a small show and had a chance to observe people viewing the images. The images were A3 (11.7 x 16.5 in) which I printed myself on a beautiful matt surface paper from France, using a 10 color gallery quality inkjet printer. I must say that the images were exquisite, although expensive, even at my costs. The viewers got Really close to the prints and moved their heads around the whole image to take it all in. Many even tried to touch the print, which was behind thick plastic. This experience made me realize that the portraits are very intimate, and perhaps best kept at the diminutive A3 size and viewed up close. Thoughts? >https://twitter.com/180books

About the Authors
Photographer George Edward Giunca, and his Thai wife, Apisatha, have traveled around Thailand armed with a circular fisheye lens to create a photo essay on the rich cultural diversity, and abundant natural beauty of the Kingdom of Thailand. Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collections of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
