At first, I wasn’t very interested in seeing churches while in Myanmar.  “We’ve got plenty of churches in my country”, I’d say, whenever the guide suggested we stop to photograph one.  But she was as stubborn as I am, and kept insisting that we see at least a couple.  She lived to regret this, since after seeing St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, I wanted to see ALL the churches in Myanmar!

 

Here’s the scoop: St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Mandalay was built in 1894, and is a most impressive example of Gothic Style architecture.  Today, there are around 450,000 Catholics in Myanmar, which is about 1% of the population.  There are many beautiful churches scattered around the country, some built by missionaries, some by the British.
