Street Food in Penang, Malaysia, Pt. 1, Sotong Kangkung

I’ll start working my way through the world of Penang’s street food.  If you have a favorite please let me know in the comments box.  I’ll start with a picture that “made me cross the street”, just to check it out.  With out further ado, let’s head on over to the Sotong Kangkung vendor and see what’s for lunch.

Sotong Kangkung Vendor

Sotong Kangkung consists of a large squid that is first dried then rehydrated and soaked in alkali water, and a green vegetable known locally as kangkung or water convolvulus which is blanched in hot water.  This dish is then topped with a sweet sauce, ground peanuts, with hot chili sauce on the side.  If this isn’t exotic enough for you, order it with a century egg, which is a duck, chicken or quail egg that has been preserved for anywhere from several weeks, to several months, in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime and rice hulls.  This causes the yolk of the egg to turn green and the albumen to turn a transparent amber hue.  This whole concoction is usually served as a salad or appetizer.

Then you can begin your dinner, when we continue…

About the Authors

Photographer George Edward Giunca, and his Thai wife, Apisatha, have traveled around Thailand armed with a circular fisheye lens to create a photo essay on the rich cultural diversity, and abundant natural beauty of the Kingdom of Thailand. Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collection of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
