The Shwedagon Pagoda
Our first trip to Myanmar was a one-week whirlwind style adventure. Although I had already committed to making photographs with a fisheye lens, we hadn’t decided to do a book on Myanmar, yet. But, there we were in the Shwedagon Pagoda, just minutes after our plane landed, wandering around with our mouths agape and our cameras attached to our faces, clicking away.
It was twilight and the whole temple had a golden glow as if there was a light inside it. Monks were chanting, and bells were ringing, and everywhere I looked was a scene that had to be captured and frozen in time. I stood as still and polite as possible while our guide calmly rattled off some facts about a strange large statue that stood in front of us.
เมื่อตอนที่ไปเมียนมาร์ทริปแรกเลย คือ ไปประมาณสัปดาห์นึงแต่รู้สึกเหมือนชะโงกทัวร์ยังไงก็ไม่รู้ สะเปะสะปะบวกกับตอนนั้นยังไม่ได้คิดว่าจะทำหนังสือ หรือเขียนบล็อก หรืออะไรเกี่ยวกับประเทศเมียนมาร์ ไปแบบแก้วเปล่าไม่มีน้ำสักหยด พอลงเครื่องที่สนามบินย่างกุ้งปุ๊บก็เริ่มทัวร์ปั๊บในเย็นวันนั้นเลย ที่แรกคือ พระมหาเจดีย์ชเวดากอง เคยเห็นแต่รูปของคนอื่น มาเจอของจริงนี่เหมือนถูกมนต์สะกด ทำให้กดชัตเตอร์กันรัวๆๆ กล้องแนบหน้าจนแทบแกะไม่ออก
เวลาโพล้เพล้พอดิบพอดี มีแสงไฟสาดส่อง พร้อมกับเสียงพระกำลังสวดมนต์พร้อมกับเสียงระฆัง และกลิ่นธูปควันเทียนอบอวลไปทั่วลานรอบเจดีย์ อารมณ์เหมือนเวลหยุดหมุนเลย ไกด์ส่วนตัวที่มากับเราเริ่มปฏิบัติหน้าที่บรรยายเกี่ยวกับเจดีย์ พร้อมกับเล่าเรื่องราวของสัตว์รูปร่างประหลาดตัวนี้ให้เราฟัง

Manussiha is but one of many mythological creatures that combine the parts and/or attributes of two different animals. He has the head of a human and the bodies of two lions. This sphinx-like creature, which originated more than 2000 years ago, was created by two Buddhist monks to battle a group of child-eating ogresses, who were kidnapping and eating babies. The ogresses ran in fear at the sight of the man-lion, and people began wearing amulets made of palm leaves with a drawing of Manussiha on it. Today, the image is mainly seen as statues guarding the four cardinal points around a temple.
“Got it,” I said, still trying to be polite. “I have to run and take photos, please continue the tour with my wife, and I’ll catch-up with you later.” My wife rolled her eyes, pulled out a notebook, and shook her head in resignation while I ran around taking pictures like a man possessed.
“มนุสสิหะ” เป็นลูกผสมระหว่าง มนุษย์ และ ราชสิีห์ ดูคล้ายสฟิงซ์ (Sphinx) ซึ่งในตำนานฉบับพม่าเล่าขานกันว่า ครั้งอดีตกาลย้อนไปสองพันกว่าปี พระเจ้าอโศกมหาราชส่งพระสมณทูตออกเดินทางเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนาและได้เทียบขึ้นฝั่งเขตเมืองสะเทิม ประเทศเมียนมาร์ บังเอิญเป็นช่วงเวลาที่ผู้คนตกอยู่ในความหวาดกลัวนางยักษ์ที่จับเด็กทารกกิน เมื่อพระมหาเถระทั้งสองทราบ จึงได้จำแลงแปลงกายเป็นมนุษย์สิงห์ ทำให้นางยักษ์หวาดกลัวและหนีหายไป เมืองสะเทิมจึงกลับมาสู่ความสงบสุข พระราชาจึงให้สร้างมนุสสิหะและประดิษฐานไว้ตรงฐานพระเจดีย์และปูชนียสถานเพื่อป้องกันภยันตรายคล้ายเป็นเทพพิทักษ์รักษาความชอบธรรม อีกทั้งพระพุทธศาสนาจึงได้เริ่มเผยแผ่ในดินแดนสุวรรณภูมิเป็นหลักมั่น
คราวนี้ไกด์กำลังจะบรรยายถึงสิ่งอื่นต่อ แต่คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดไม่รอฟังละ เพราะอยากไปถ่ายรูป เลยทิ้งฝนไว้กับไกด์ให้อธิบายรายละเอียดให้ฝนฟังแทนซะงั้น!! อิชั้นก็ต้องจดสิคะ จะไปจำอะไรได้หมดล่ะ ปากกากระดาษเตรียมมาพร้อม พอเสร็จจากชเวดากองก็ได้เวลาทานอาหารเย็นพอดี ทานไปชมการแสดงไป ก็เริ่มวางแผนทริปสองส่องเมียนมาร์ต่อทันที
Hours later, as we were watching a Burmese cultural dinner show, complete with a Tonaya dance and planning our next trip to this magical country.
