We love exploring new markets and trying new dishes! Sometimes I get so excited the night before that I find it hard to sleep! Chiang Mai has many amazing markets, which they call “Gads”, but we chose the “Chiang Mai Gate Market” first since it was near our house. We had been to this gad once before, and of all things, I found an excellent watch repair stall in the back corner.
วันนี้พาไปเดินตลาดเล็กๆ หรือที่ชาวเชียงใหม่เรียกว่า “กาด” … โบกรถสี่ล้อแดงจากแม่เหียะมุ่งหน้าไปตลาดประตูเมืองเชียงใหม่ คนละ ๕๐ บาท รถสี่ล้อแดงจอดหน้าตลาดเป๊ะเลย
ด้านหน้าของตลาดเป็นส่วนขายอาหารที่ปรุงสำเร็จ และฤดูร้อนแบบนี้ข้าวเหนียว ทุเรียน มะม่วง ขายดิบขายดี ขนมก็มากมีหลากสีสัน ถัดเข้าไปเป็นบริเวณร้านค้าผักนานาชนิด ถ่ายวิดีโอไปก็เริ่มนึกถึงเมนูต่างๆ ..แต่.. อาหารพื้นเมืองนี่ผุดมาก่อนเลย อย่างเช่น ข้าวซอยไก่ และไส้อั่ว

Prepared Food Up Front~Spices in the Middle~Raw Meat in the Back
Typically, the vendors in the front of the markets sell prepared food such as curries, fried snacks and desserts. In the middle of a market, you’ll find household goods, clothes, and various supplies to give monks or take to a temple to make merit. Farther back are the vegetables and in the very back, sometimes in a separate room, you’ll find fresh meat.
One of my favorite local foods is Chiang Mai Sausage (Sai Ua). This sausage is very spicy and made from about a dozen different ingredients, aged, charbroiled and served with sliced ginger and cabbage. Every time I see a new vendor I try to buy some and sample. I was already pleased with the taste of the ones sold in Bangkok, but the local variety is even better.

Next, we headed for the meat section, pushing our way through a plastic fly screen and found free range chickens, tons of pork, and a small stall selling beef and buffalo. I had been looking for a beef rib roast, but they were sold out, and I settled for a 1.3-kilo piece of pork butt. I like to barbecue on Sundays and ended up marinating the pork Chinese style, and slow smoking it with cherry wood chips. The result was so moist and tender that we ended up eating way too much! Oh, back to the market…

เชฟของเรา (ช่างภาพและผู้ช่วยนั่นเอง) ซื้อสะโพกหมู สันคอและตับ จากนั้นเค้าก็แวะทักทายคุณพิกกี้ หน้ายิ้มแฉ่งเลย ไปๆๆ .. ไปเดินตลาดกันต่อ… อีกส่วนนึงเป็นพื้นที่ขายข้างของเครื่องใช้ในครัวเรือนจิปาถะมากมาย ตลอดไปจนถึงเครื่องสังฆภัณฑ์
Our Treasures from the Day of Shopping!
Wua Lai Street ~ Silversmiths and Khao Soi
Next, we went to Wua Lai Street in search of a restaurant that claimed to have the best Khao Soi in town. After tasting a sample, I believed them and we took some home for dinner. Minutes later we were in the back of a modified pick-up truck that the locals use for transportation and on our way home. Altogether, our grocery bill came out to around $35 which was almost 35% cheaper than our markets in Bangkok. I can’t remember what such a spread might have cost in the USA, but it was a real bargain and an adventure too.
