We personally love Suvarnabhumi Airport, and just looking at his photo of the escalator that leads down to the international flight gates, makes my stomach do an excited flip-flop! Somehow it reminds me of a giant tent or beehive, and I love the feeling of light and space. But let’s not spend all day here; we want to give you a quick tour of Bangkok. This is a city where your daily commute to work, or play, might involve a boat, train, and even a tuk-tuk!
มาถึงประเทศไทยโดยสวัสดิภาพ เดินเข้าสู่ตัวอาคารผู้โดยสารท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ ก็สังเกตว่าเป็นอาคารที่โปร่ง-โล่ง-สบายจริงๆ เพราะอาคารถูกออกแบบมาให้ประหยัดพลังงาน ติดตั้งหลังคาผ้าใยสังเคราะห์โปร่งแสง ๓ ชั้นตรงส่วนอาคารเทียบเครื่องบิน โดยชั้นนอกนั้นมีความทนทานต่อสภาพลมฟ้าอากาศ ชั้นกลางช่วยป้องกันความร้อนและเสียงจากภายนอก ส่วนชั้นในช่วยป้องกันความร้อนและดูดซับเสียงภายในและให้ความสว่างแบบธรรมชาติ ผนวกกับแนวโค้งที่สอดรับได้อย่างกลมกลืนแลดูสบายตา… ไม่ได้จะพาทัศนศึกษาสนามบินนะ ไปๆ ออกไปเที่ยวชมการเดินทางของคนเมืองกรุง(เทพ)กัน

The River of Kings
I still remember my first time in Bangkok, some twenty years ago, and my first trip down the Chao Phraya River. I rode in a boat like the one you see on the left, past golden temples and some very photogenic sites, running from one side of the boat to the other with my camera’s motor drive growling fiercely! We suggest that you make sure to travel down the river, at least twice during your visit; once at dawn and once at dusk. Better yet, take a dinner cruise and feast on delicious Thai food as you go.
This river begins in the northern part of central Thailand, at the confluence of the Nan and Ping Rivers, and then flows southward for 372 Kilometers to the Gulf of Thailand. This “River of Kings” is a main artery of transportation and is teaming with fish, freshwater shrimp and other aquatic wildlife. After your meal, just get off at the main pier and flag down a tuk-tuk. A what, you say????

“OK, Tuk-Tuk, You Go!”
The auto rickshaw, called “Tuk-Tuk” or “Sam-Lor”, is a widely used form of urban transportation in Bangkok and other Thai cities. There are no meters and trip costs are negotiated in advance. The first 30 Tuk-Tuks came from Japan to Thailand in 1960. These are noisy, smoking beasts that make every trip memorable. Some have described it as a souped-up lawn mower, which I think is an apt description.
นั่งเรือแล้วไปต่อ “รถตุ๊กตุ๊ก” กินลม-ชมวิวกัน .. รถตุ๊กตุ๊ก หรือ รถสามล้อเครื่อง เริ่มนำเข้ามาจากประเทศญี่ปุ่นเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๓ นำมาดัดแปลงเพื่อใช้ขนส่งผู้โดยสารและสัมภาระทั้งในกรุงเทพและต่างจังหวัด ปัจจุบันรถตุ๊กตุ๊กกลายมาเป็นพาหนะยอดนิยมของนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างชาติอีกด้วย …เสียงรถตุ๊กตุ๊กอาจจะดังไปนิดนึงแต่คงไม่เท่าพวกแว๊นส์แน่ๆ

The City of Angels (Not to Be Confused with Los Angeles)
Bangkok, AKA “The City of Angels”, is such a huge, space-age looking city, once you reach downtown. Yes, there are traffic jams, pollution, and crowds, along with the heat and humidity, but the modern architecture, the ubiquitous temples and food stands, and the “Thainess” of this place make it a unique 21st Century city, that will always hold a special place in your heart. There is also a rail system that looks something like a monorail, that can speed you back to your hotel after a day of adventure. This frames the photo above.
เข้าเมืองไปต่อด้วยรถไฟฟ้า แอร์เย็นๆ เหาะเหิร เดินอากาศท่ามกลางตึกระฟ้า — กรุงเทพมหานคร “พระนครอันกว้างใหญ่ดุจเทพนคร” มหานครที่ผู้คนหลั่งไหลเข้ามาสู่ศูนย์กลางทางเศรษฐกิจ มลพิษและการคมนาคมคับคั่งเป็นเรื่องธรรมดาของมหานครทุกแห่งทั่วโลก แต่สิ่งที่ทำให้กรุงเทพมหานครโดดเด่นและมีเสน่ห์ต่างจากมหานครอื่นๆ คือ สถาปัตยกรรมไทยที่งามล้ำค่าอย่างพระบรมมหาราชวังและวัดวาอาราม กอปรกับความเป็นไทย ตลอดจนถึงตึกระฟ้าซึ่งล้อมรอบด้วยกระจกราวกับลอยอยู่บนฟ้าของกรุงเทพมหานครแห่งศตวรรษที่ ๒๑

Bhumibol Bridge 1
As the sun sets, I look out my upstairs window at this beautiful piece of modern sculpture, known as the Bhumibol Bridge, off in the distance. You may have seen it featured on the Discovery Channel, some years back. When we were almost through with the photography for our THAILAND 180º book, it seemed to scream, “Include me too!” so we did. I have a fantasy of renting a Porsche and taking it for a test drive on this bridge someday, but that’s our secret!
I hope you enjoyed this fast trip around Bangkok. Most of my friends that have visited, also went on this same tour, before I turned them loose in the city, to explore on their own. We’ll cover some Bangkok landmarks in a future blog, but for now, be aware that the Bangkok portrayed in that lame, but the somewhat humorous movie “Hangover” is mainly fictitious!
