Puppet Masters to Descend on Bangkok! Part 2
In our last post, we talked a lot about shadow puppets, and you may have thought, “These are puppets?” Today we’ll talk about puppets controlled by strings, also called marionettes, which are much more familiar to most of us. Also, if you happen to be in Bangkok, be sure to mark November 2nd on your calendar. Read on to find what makes this date special!

Puppet shows in the past were reserved for royal entertainment and rarely performed outside the wall of the palace. The puppet’s costumes were made of the finest materials and sometimes covered in gems and gold. Thailand has a huge tradition of puppetry; some operated with strings from above, and some are operated using a set of pull-rings from below. They are named according to their size, the complexity of their movements, how the movements are controlled, and their costumes. Most of the shows retell the story of the great saga, the Ramayana, with the familiar (to Thais) Khon masks. If you’re a real fan of the craft of puppetry, I strongly recommend that you visit the National Museum in Bangkok, Thailand. Be sure to arrange for a free museum guide as they can be very knowledgeable, about the museum, as well as Thailand in general. I had the opportunity to study in the museum’s excellent volunteer docent program and found it invaluable to my understanding of Thai culture and history. The course is presented a few times a year and takes about 6 weeks to complete.
หุ่นหลวง หุ่นหลวงถือเป็นการแสดงหุ่นที่มีกำเนิดมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยาตอนต้น ตัวหุ่นตั้งแต่ปลายยอดชฎาจนถึงปลายเท้ามีความสูงประมาณ 1 เมตร ตัวหุ่นทำด้วยไม้ช่วงลำตัวส่วนหนึ่ง และช่วงสะโพกอีกส่วนหนึ่ง ทั้งอกและสะโพกนี้เป็นไม้คว้านจนบางเบาดี ช่วงเอวเป็นเส้นหวายขดเป็นวงซ้อนกันต่อระหว่างอกกับสะโพกเพื่อให้หุ่น เคลื่อนไหวยักสะเอวได้ หุ่นหลวงเหล่านี้แม้จะมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าหัวหุ่นกระบอก แต่ก็มีน้ำหนักเบากว่ามาก ฝีมือการประดิษฐ์ก็ล้วนวิจิตรประณีต แต่งองค์ทรงเครื่องแบบโขน สมกับที่ได้ชื่อว่า “หุ่นหลวง” โดยแท้ นอกจากนี้ยังมีวิธีการบังคับเชิดที่สลับซับซ้อน ภายในตัวหุ่นทำสายโยงติดกับอวัยวะของตัวหุ่น และปล่อยเชือกลงมารวมกันที่แกนไม้ส่วนล่าง เพื่อใช้ดึงบังคับให้เคลื่อนไหวได้แม้กระทั่งลูกตา
Myanmar has a similar tradition known as Yoke Thay. The image above shows one of these puppets, who was resting in an antique store in Mandalay before we adopted him. Their appearance at the Harmony World Puppet Carnival in Bangkok is highly anticipated, as their shows are even more rare. Everything from the staging to the puppets’ costume is opulently decorated. The themes of their shows center around the Jakata (stories of the Buddha’s life), Nats (Burmese spirits), legends about various pagodas in Myanmar, local folklore and sometimes even politics. The shows can be quite elaborate featuring 30 to 100 characters for each play. Like their Thai counterparts, the puppeteers are highly skilled and well rehearsed. We were able to see a few examples during our visit to Myanmar and can attest that they put on an excellent show.

Yoke Thay เป็นหุ่นกระบอกประเภทหุ่นสาย (String-puppet หรือ Marionette) เป็นหุ่นกระบอกไม้แบบที่ใช้เส้นเชือกชักเชิดแบบโบราณของประเทศเมียนมาร์ ในสมัยก่อนหุ่นเหล่านี้ถูกเรียกว่า Ah-Myint-Tha-Bin ซึ่งแปลตรงตัวได้ว่าการแสดงระดับสูง การแสดงนี้ไม่ใช่เพียงเพื่อความบันเทิง แต่เป็นศิลปะที่ได้รับความเคารพจากทุกชนชั้น หุ่นกระบอกเหล่านี้เป็นเครื่องมือที่ช่วยให้ผู้คนตระหนักถึงเหตุการณ์ในปัจจุบัน เพื่อสอนประชาชนเกี่ยวกับวรรณคดี ประวัติศาสตร์ และศาสนา อีกทั้งยังแสดงให้เห็นถึงวิถีชีวิต … เช่นเดียวกันกับหุ่นหลวงของไทย Yoke-Thay เป็นการรวมตัวกันของงานประติมากรรม จิตรกรรม หัตถกรรม งานตัดเย็บ งานปักถักร้อย และนาฏศิลป์ ซึ่งมีการบูรณาการผสานเข้าด้วยกันเป็นนาฎกรรมชั้นสูง เรื่องราวที่นิยมนำมาเล่นมีตั้งแต่เรื่องเกี่ยวกับพระพุทธเจ้า เช่น ชาดก ตำนานเกี่ยวกับนัต (วิญญาณ หรือ ผีที่ให้คุณและโทษ) ตำนานองค์พระเจดีย์ วรรณคดี จนถึงนิทานพื้นบ้าน คติสอนใจ หรือเรื่องราวที่แต่งขึ้นมุ่งหมายจะยั้วล้อไปกับเหตุการณ์จริง เพื่อสื่อสารทั้งประเด็นการเมือง และการร้องเรียนความไม่เป็นธรรม
อีกความน่าสนใจ คือ เทคนิคการชักสายหุ่น ผู้เชิดหุ่นจะเชิดจากด้านบนของโรงหุ่น ซึ่งสร้างยกพื้นอยู่ด้านหลังของฉาก เพื่อให้ผู้เชิดแสดงสามารถยืนชะโงกออกมาเชิดตัวหุ่นที่อยู่ข้างหน้าฉากได้ ถนัด ด้วยความสลับสับซ้อนของกลไกสายชักที่หุ่นแต่ละตัวจะมีแตกต่างกันไป ผู้เชิดชักสายที่เคยเชิดหุ่นตัวหนึ่งจะไม่สามารถใช้เทคนิคเดียวกันกับหุ่นอีกตัวได้ เพราะหุ่นสายบางตัวจะมีสายชักมากกว่า ๒๐ สาย การแสดงหุ่น Yoke Thay จึงต้องอาศัยประสบการณ์ และความชำนาญสูง เมื่อผู้เชิดมาจับหุ่นตัวใหม่นั่นหมายถึงผู้เชิดต้องเรียนรู้การชักสายใหม่ทั้งหมด ดังนั้น คณะแสดงที่มีหุ่นมากก็จะทำให้คณะแสดงนั้นมีสมาชิกมากและอาจจะมากถึง ๓๐-๑๐๐ คนเลยทีเดียว
