Isaan Landmarks, (Part 1)
I know that we spend lots of time talking about our travels around northeastern Thailand, known as Isaan, but there’s so much to see here! The Isaan region contains 20 provinces and covers one-third of the country. Several ethnic groups including Kuy (Suai), Yoy, Phu Thai, So, Thai Korat, add a lot of local color and make this area very different from the rest of the Kingdom. I really hope that everyone that loves Thai food, and the main tourists cities in Thailand, has a chance to visit this region too. Today we’ll look at one of the most famous of the pagodas here, Phra That Phanom, as well as some other sites that we found interesting.
ภาคอีสาน หรือ ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ประกอบด้วย ๒๐ จังหวัด มีพื้นที่ประมาณ ๑๗๐,๒๒๖ ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือ ๑ ใน ๓ ของพื้นที่ทั้งประเทศ ตั้งอยู่บนแอ่งโคราชและแอ่งสกลนคร โดยมีเทือกเขาเพชรบูรณ์และเทือกเขาดงพญาเย็นเป็นแนวกั้นแยกภาคอีสานออกจากภาคเหนือและภาคกลาง ชาวอีสานจะมีพื้นเพมาจากคนหลายกลุ่ม สร้างบ้านเรือนอยู่ในพื้นที่ต่างๆ เช่น ชาวส่วย (กูย) ย้อ ผู้ไทย ชาวโซ้ รวมทั้งไทยโคราช เป็นภูมิภาคที่มีความหลากหลายทางศิลปวัฒนธรรมและประเพณี … ซึ่งวันนี้เรานำเสนอ “แลนด์มาร์คภาคอีสาน ตอนที่ ๑”…โดยเริ่มที่พระธาตุพนมเป็นลำดับแรก
I had heard about Phra That Phanom and seen many photographs before we had a chance to visit the province of Nakhon Phanom, where it’s located. I knew that it was highly revered by many Thais, and for some, was the symbol of northern Isaan. It was believed to have been built by a Laotian king in the 11 Century. According to legend, the pagoda contains a breastbone of Buddha, which makes it one of the most important Theravada Buddhism sites in Thailand. I was excited to get a chance to photograph it on a sunny day, with big fluffy clouds and that’s what I got! At first, I couldn’t find an angle that I liked, which is common for me in places that I’ve seen in many photographs. In fact, I had tried every angle in the main temple area, before I walked outside of the walled area, and made the image above.
พระธาตุพนม ณ วัดพระธาตุพนมวรมหาวิหาร อำเภอธาตุพนม จังหวัดนครพนม ภายในองค์พระธาตุบรรจุพระอุรังคธาตุของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าไว้ และองค์พระธาตุได้รับการบูรณะปฏิสังขรอยู่ทุกยุคทุกสมัย แต่พระธาตุพนมได้ล้มทลายลงทั้งองค์ ในปีพ.ศ.๒๕๑๘ เนื่องจากความเก่าแก่ขององค์พระธาตุพนมและประจวบกับระหว่างนั้นฝนตกพายุพัดแรงติดต่อกันมาหลายวัน ประชาชนทั้งประเทศได้ร่วมบริจาคทุนทรัพย์ก่อสร้างองค์พระธาตุขึ้นใหม่ตามแบบเดิม โดยปัจจุบันองค์พระธาตุมีฐานกว้างด้านละ ๑๒.๓๓ เมตร สูง ๕๓.๖๐ เมตร เป็นเจดีย์ทรงสี่เหลี่ยมสูงแลดูสง่างาม พระธาตุพนมไม่เพียงแต่เป็นศูนย์รวมจิตใจของชาวนครพนมเท่านั้น พระธาตุพนมยังเป็นที่เคารพของชาวไทยทั่วทุกภูมิภาค รวมถึงชาวลาวด้วยเช่นกัน กล่าวกันว่าเป็นพระธาตุประจำปีเกิดท่านที่เกิดปีวอก (ปีลิง)
While we were traveling around the province of Mukdahan, chasing down various sites, we visited the Mukdahan Tower, which the locals call Ho Kaeo Mukdahan. The tower is 65.5 meters tall and has seven floors, including an observation deck and from what I’m told, a small museum detailing the origins of the Mukdahan people. We decided not to go up into the tower as it opened late and the city was wrapped in fog by the time it did. Luckily, we had slipped in earlier in the morning while the landscapers were grooming the grounds! The views from the tower shown on the web looked about the same as the view we had from the very comfortable Ploy Palace Hotel. We usually don’t recommend hotels, but this one is a standout and has free WiFi.
หอแก้วมุกดาหาร หนึ่งในสัญลักษณ์ของจังหวัดมุกดาหาร สร้างขึ้นเพื่อเฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบามสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราชฉลองสิริราชสมบัติครบ ๕๐ ปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๙ มีชื่อเต็มว่า “หอแก้วมุกดาหารเฉลิมพระเกียรติกาญจนาภิเษก” มีทั้งหมด ๗ ชั้น ความสูง ๖๕.๕๐ เมตร ส่วนบนสุดเป็นหอชมวิวทิวทัศน์รอบตัวเมืองมุกดาหาร และแขวงสะหวันนะเขต สาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว … หลายท่านอาจคิดว่ามุกดาหารมีอะไรน่าสนใจ? แล้วที่พักเป็นอย่างไร?… มีไม่น้อยไปกว่าจังหวัดอื่นอื่นเลยทีเดียว ทั้งภูผาเทิบ ที่มีกลุ่มหินมีลักษณะหรือรูปทรงแปลกวิจิตรพิสดาร หินบางก้อนมีรูปร่างคล้ายเครื่องบินไอพ่น รอบเท้าบู้ท เก๋งจีน มงกุฎ และในฤดูฝนต่อฤดูหนาวจะเต็มไปด้วยไม้ดอกป่านานาชนิด อยู่ไม่ไกลจากตัวเมือง … ส่วนที่พักเราแนะนำโรงแรมพลอยพาเลซ วิวสวยของขุนเขามโนรมย์ที่โอบอ้อมเมือง อีกด้านนึงวิวร่มรื่นของสวนสาธารณะอันเงียบสงบ หรือเลือกวิวทอดไปสุดตาแลเห็นสายน้ำโขง ห้องพักสะอาดกว้างขวาง บริการดีเยี่ยม มาถึงที่มุกดาหารแล้วต้องหาโอกาสไปวัดป่าวิเวกวัฒนาราม อ.คำชะอี (ภาพด้านล่าง)
Our landmark is Wat Pa Wiwek Watthanaram, also located in Mukdahan. This is Not a place for tourists, as it’s a temple for forest monks. Forest monks specialize in meditation and the rules they follow are much more strict than other Buddhist monks. Most notably, they only eat one meal each day, which helps keep their minds cleansed. I had at one time considered being a forest monk, for the traditional 3-month rainy season, but I knew that it might be a lot more than I could handle! The abbot of this temple was the famous Luang Pu Jaam, who lived to be 100 years old, and was said to have obtained enlightenment. In the center of the image above is the Bu Thong Kitti Chedi, which Luang Pu Jaam envisioned in a dream, and directed architects to build in 1984. The structure was completed in 1987, is 45 meters high, and contains a 1st floor room where monks perform various rituals and a 2nd floor that houses Buddha relics. I was especially lucky, as I got a chance to see the venerable Luang Pu Jaam on the day we visited, as he was still alive then. I really wanted to make a portrait of him, but the monks were engaged in morning prayers and I didn’t want to disturb them. He died five months later.
เจดีย์บู่ทองกิตติ ตั้งอยู่ที่วัดป่าวิเวกวัฒนาราม บ้านห้วยทราย ตำบลคำชะอี อำเภอคำชะอี จังหวัดมุกดาหาร สร้างขึ้นโดยการปรารภของหลวงปู่จาม มหาปุญโญ ตามรูปแบบที่ท่านเคยเห็นในนิมิตว่าได้ท่องเที่ยวไปยังสถานที่ลึกลับแห่งหนึ่ง แล้วไปพบเจดีย์รูปร่างแปลกประหลาด เมื่อตื่นขึ้นจึงได้ถ่ายทอดให้ลูกศิษย์ที่มีความสามารถทางการวาดภาพ วาดตรงตามที่ท่านให้รายละเอียด และดำเนินการก่อสร้างเพื่อบรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุขององค์พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า และพระธาตุของพระอรหันต์สาวกของพระองค์ อาทิ พระสีวลี พระอุปคุต พระองคุลีมาล เป็นต้น นอกจากวัดป่าวิเวกวัฒนารามจะมีเจดีย์รูปทรงแปลกแล้ว ยังมีกุฏิพระเสาเดียวที่แปลกไม่เคยพบที่อื่นเลยจำนวนหลายหลัง นับเป็นวัดที่สำคัญและได้รับความสนใจจากพุทธศาสนิกชนแวะมาสักการบูชา เพื่อเป็นสิริมงคลอย่างไม่ขาดสาย ตอนที่เราเดินทางไปถ่ายภาพนี้ หลวงปู่จามยังมีชีวิตอยู่ เราเห็นท่านกำลังปฏิบัติกิจทางสงฆ์จึงไม่ได้เข้าไปขอถ่ายภาพท่าน หลังจากนั้นเพียง ๕ เดือน หลวงปู่จามละสังขาร มรณภาพด้วยโรคชรา เมื่อวันที่ ๑๙ มกราคม ๒๕๕๖
We had time to kill in the province of Sakon Nakhon and decided to drive around and sightsee. Imagine my surprise when I saw the church in the photograph above, in the middle of typical rural scenery! Cars were pouring out of the parking lot, as apparently Mass had just let out. I quickly made the photo of the exterior and rushed into the church, knowing that the doors may be locked soon. I stopped briefly to read a small plaque and gleaned these facts: It was called the Shrine of the Alliance of the Two Hearts and was completed in 2000 to mark 2000 year’s since Christ’s ascension into heaven.
The word ascension popped in my mind when I stepped inside and saw it’s flying saucer design. WOW! The shrine also has a museum with a display of aspergillums and other liturgical implements. Sure enough, the caretaker started turning off the lights, just minutes after I had made the image above. We’ve tried to find more information on this shrine, but the internet searches weren’t fruitful.

ระหว่างที่เรามีเวลานั่งรถไปรอบๆ สกลนคร เราแปลกใจที่ได้พบ “สักการสถานดวงพระหฤทัยศักดิ์สิทธิ์ยิ่งของพระเยชูเจ้าและดวงหทัยนิรมลของพระมารดามารีอา” ที่มีสถาปัตยกรรมแปลกตาอีกแห่งในภาคอีสานนี้ รีบวนรถกลับไปยังสถานที่นี้ทันที สักการสถานฯ นี้มีการออกแบบให้มีลักษณะทรงกลม รูปทรงคล้ายเจดีย์ยอดแหลม ตรงกลางยอดมีกางเขนตั้งเด่นเป็นสง่ามองเห็นได้จากระยะไกล ความสูงจากพื้นถึงยอดแหลม ๔๗ เมตร ตามแบบสถาปัตยกรรมสมัยใหม่ที่ผสมผสานระหว่างศิลปกรรมแบบไทยกับตะวันตกได้อย่างกลมกลืนและสวยงาม นอกจากนี้ยังมีส่วนที่เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ทางศาสนาสำหรับเก็บรักษาศาสนภัณฑ์และสิ่งของเครื่องใช้ของมิซซันนารีในอดีต สักการสถานฯ ได้มีพิธีเสกและเปิดอย่างยิ่งใหญ่เนื่องในโอกาสสมโภชปีปิติมหาการุญ ปีค.ศ. ๒๐๐๐ เพื่อถวายเกียรติแด่ดวงพระหฤทัยศักดิ์สิทธิ์ยิ่งของพระเยซูเจ้าและดวงหทัยนิรมลของพระมารดามารีอา บรรยากาศภายในสักการสถานฯ แม้ไม่มีผู้ใดในขณะนี้แต่ดูสงบ สง่า งดงามมาก โดยเฉพาะบริเวณพระแท่น ตู้ศีลและผนังตู้ศีลที่ได้รับการแกะสลักปูนปั้นได้อย่างวิจิตรบรรจง
