Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Woramahaviharn, Phitsanulok, Thailand

After our last two posts on the food in Phitsanulok, I thought that we should mention why we were visiting the city in the first place.  After all, at 600 years it is one of the Kingdom’s oldest cities and the birthplace of King Naresuan.  If you’re a student of Thai history, you’ll recall the former capital cities of Thailand, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya.  During their rise and fall, Phitsanulok was important strategically, both for trade and war, as it has served as a crossroad between the north and central areas of the country.  Even though a large fire destroyed many parts of the old city in 1955, the town still has a very historic feel to it.  If history isn’t your thing, there are also many natural areas in the province for trekking and bird watching. The local folk arts & crafts museum known as the Sergeant-Major Dr. Thawee Buranakhet Folklore Museum really shows the ingenuity of the locals and features different kinds of traps, farm equipment and things of that nature.  Humm, it’s really much more interesting than it sounds!

พิษณุโลก หรือชื่อในประวัติศาสตร์เรียกว่า “เมืองสองแคว” ตั้งอยู่ระหว่างแม่น้ำสองสายคือ แม่น้ำนาน และ แม่น้ำแควน้อย  พิษณุโลกเป็นเมืองยุทธศาสตร์ที่สำคัญมาตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัย-อยุธยา-ธนบุรี-รัตนโกสินทร์  อาจจะไม่ต้องกล่าวถึงประวัติศาสตร์มากนักเพราะคนไทยเราทราบกันดีอยู่   พิษณุโลกมีสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวทั้งโบราณสถานและธรรมชาติอันสวยงามมากมาย แต่หลายท่านอาจจะยังไม่เคยมาเยี่ยมเยือนชมความงาม เช่น ภูหินร่องกล้า, ทุ่งแสลงหลวง, น้ำตกชาติตระการ, ภูสอยดาว, น้ำตกแก่งซอง, พิพิธภัณฑ์พื้นบ้านจ่าทวี, พระราชวังจันทน์, วัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุฯ เป็นต้น

The most important temple in Phitsanulok is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Woramahaviharn, AKA, Wat Yai, was founded in 1357 by King Phaya Lithai.  Buddhist and lovers of Buddhist art from all over the world come to marvel at the beautiful bronze-cast image known as Phra Buddha Chinnarat, which means, “Victorious King”.   Dual yellow spotlights inside the large viharn flood the statue with light, as two angels painted on the wall behind it, shower it with flowers.  The large main entrance with its mother-of-pearl inserts was donated by King Boromakot in 1756, and the enormous gilded columns and gold designs on the ceiling, along with the chandeliers, give this temple a palatial feel.

มาถึงแล้วก็ต้องไปกราบสักการะ “พระพุทธชินราช” เพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคล  ที่วัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร หรือเรียกขานกันว่า วัดใหญ่ หรือวัดพระศรี  — วัดใหญ่เป็นพระอารามหลวง  เป็นศูนย์รวมทางจิตใจของชาวเมือง  ตั้งอยู่ที่ถนนพุทธบูชา ตำบลในเมือง ริมแม่น้ำน่านฝั่งตะวันออก สร้างขึ้นพร้อมกับการสร้างเมืองเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๑๙๐๐  เป็นที่ประดิษฐานของพระพุทธชินราช พระพุทธรูปสำคัญคู่บ้านคู่เมืองมาแต่โบราณกาล  เป็นพระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัยขนาดใหญ่ หล่อด้วยทองสัมฤทธิ์ ขนาดหน้าตักกว้าง ๕ ศอก ๑ คืบ ๕ นิ้ว และสูง ๗ ศอก ได้รับการกล่าวขานว่าเป็นพระพุทธรูปที่มีพุทธลักษณะงดงามที่สุดในประเทศ   เส้นรอบนอกพระวรกายอ่อนช้อย พระขนงโก่ง พระเกตุมาลาเป็นเปลวเพลิง พระหัตถ์มีปลายนิ้วทั้งสี่เสมอกัน ซึ่งเป็นลักษณะพิเศษเรียกว่า ทีฒงฺคุลี ซุ้มเรือนแก้วทำด้วยไม้แกะสลักสร้างในสมัยอยุธยา แกะสลักเป็นรูปมกร (ลำตัวคล้ายมังกร มีงวงคล้ายช้าง) อยู่ตรงปลายซุ้ม และตัวเหรา (คล้ายจระเข้) อยู่ตรงกลาง และมีเทพอสุราคอยปกป้ององค์พระอยู่ ๒ ตน   พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ ๑ (พญาลิไท) แห่งกรุงสุโขทัย โปรดให้สร้างขึ้นพร้อมกับพระพุทธชินสีห์และพระศรีศาสดา ซึ่งปัจจุบันประดิษฐานอยู่ที่วัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร

One legend connected with the Phra Buddha Chinnarat is quite remarkable.  According to the story, when King Phaya Lithai wanted to make 3 Buddha images to install at this temple, he assembled 5 Brahmin priests that were experts at casting, and the whole town gathered to help.  After removing the images from the mold, two of the images were perfect, but the Phra Buddha Chinnarat image was incomplete.  They tried to recast the image many times without success, until one day a man the white clothes of a Brahmin priest appeared mysteriously and helped cast a perfect image.  He disappeared soon afterward and so far hasn’t been seen again.

I have a feeling that he turns up at the Night Market every now and then for a gourmet meal!

ตำนานกล่าวไว้ว่า พระเจ้าศรีธรรมไตรปิฏกหรือพระมหาธรรมราชา (พญาลิไท) กษัตริย์องค์ที่ ๔ ในพระราชวงศ์พระร่วง สมัยกรุงสุโขทัย  โปรดให้ช่างสวรรคโลก ช่างเชียงแสน และช่างหริภุญไชย สมทบกับช่างกรุงศรีสัชนาลัย ช่วยกันหล่อพระพุทธรูปขนาดใหญ่ ๓ องค์ ได้แก่ พระศรีศาสดา พระพุทธชินราช และพระพุทธชินสีห์ จวบจนถึงวันพฤหัสบดี ขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๔ ปีเถาะจุลศักราช ๗๑๗ (ราว พ.ศ. ๑๘๙๘) ได้มงคลฤกษ์ กระทำพิธีเททองหล่อพระพุทธรูปทั้ง ๓ องค์   เมื่อเททองหล่อเสร็จแล้ว และทำการแกะพิมพ์ออกปรากฏพระพุทธชินสีห์และพระศรีศาสดา มีองค์พระสมบูรณ์สวยงามดี   ส่วนพระพุทธชินราชนั้นได้หล่อถึง 3 ครั้งก็ไม่เสร็จเป็นองค์พระได้  กล่าวคือทองแล่นไม่ติดเต็มองค์   พระเจ้าศรีธรรมไตรปิฏกจึงทรงตั้งสัตยาธิษฐานเสี่ยงเอาบุญบารมีของพระองค์เป็นที่ตั้ง   ครั้งนั้นจึงร้อนถึงอาสน์พระอินทร์เจ้าจึงนฤมิตเป็นตาปะขาวลงมาช่วยทำรูปพระ คุมพิมพ์ปั้นเบ้า   ด้วยอานุภาพพระอินทราธิราชเจ้าทองก็แล่นรอบคอบบริบูรณ์ทุกประการหาที่ติมิ ได้   พระเจ้าศรีธรรมไตรปิฏกทรงปิติโสมนัสเป็นอย่างยิ่ง จึงตรัสให้หา “ตาปะขาว” ผู้นั้น แต่ตาปะขาวได้หายตัวไปแล้ว หมู่บ้านและวัดที่ตาปะขาวหายไปนั้นได้ชื่อว่า บ้านตาปะขาวหายและวัดตาปะขาวหายต่อมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้   และจากวัดตาปะขาวหายขึ้นไปทางทิศเหนือประมาณ 800 เมตร ได้ปรากฏหลักฐานเกี่ยวกับการหายตัวไปของตาปะขาว   เล่ากันว่ามีผู้พบเห็นว่าท้องฟ้าเปิดเป็นช่องขึ้นไป   ชาวบ้านเห็นเป็นที่อัศจรรย์จึงได้สร้างศาลาขึ้นไว้ ณ พื้นดินเบื่องล่างไว้เป็นที่ระลึก เรียกว่า “ศาลาช่อฟ้า” ตราบจนทุกวันนี้
