It’s Rhinoceros Beetle Fighting Season!

Driving into Nan, I noticed this huge Rhinoceros Beetle statue by the side of the road. With further research I discovered a whole culture in northern and northeastern Thailand, that raises, fights and preserves these large beetles. This time of year, a new group of beetles hatches and are collected from their homes, deep in the jungle. The beetles will be kept as pets until they grow larger, and will have their chance to fight other beetles in a contest. Every day the beetles will be fed their favorite meal: sugarcane juice. It is believed that the sugarcane juice makes the beetle strong and increases his desire for a female beetle.
ระหว่างทางไปอำเภอปัว จังหวัดน่าน เราพบกับ “นักสู้แห่งขุนเขา” หรือที่หลายคนรู้จักกันในนาม “กว่าง”, “แมงคาม”,….. ในฤดูฝนชุ่มฉ่ำแบบนี้ สามารถหากว่างได้ไม่ยากในป่า เพราะกว่างโตเต็มวัยจะผุดขึ้นมาใช้ชีวิตนอกดิน หากินยางไม้จากเปลือกไม้บ้าง หน่อไม้บ้าง รวมถึงผลไม้และพืชบางชนิด อาหารที่กว่างโปรดปรานที่สุดก็คือ อ้อย เพราะช่วยทำให้กว่างแข็งแรงและปึ๋งปั๋ง!! … และเมื่อสีเริ่มเข้มขึ้น, (ตัวผู้) ปีกเริ่มพัฒนาเป็นเปลือกแข็ง 1 คู่ ที่นูนอยู่เหมือนสวมชุดเกราะ, เขายาว, แข็งแรง, หล่อ/สวยงาม พร้อมผสมพันธุ์ หรือนำมาประกวดและชนกว่างกัน
“กว่าง” เป็นด้วงหรือแมลงปีกแข็งชนิดหนึ่ง มันสามารถใช้เขาของมันยกสิ่งของที่มีนำหนักมากกว่าตัวมันเองได้ถึง 20 กว่าเท่าของน้ำหนักตัว

In the contest, the first beetle to raise the other beetle by its horns, or knocks his opponent off of the fighting area wins. A female beetle is placed in a bamboo stick underneath, to make the males more competitive. Since this species can lift 20 times their own weight, this is quite exciting and harmless to the bugs! The beetle champions are kept as pets until they die, and are then preserved by taxidermists. Losers are released. This is all a lot more exciting than it sounds and leaves the village taxidermist with more work than he can handle. Nan is a great place to visit!
