PENANG 180º: Dim Sum

Dim Sum

Dim Sum, brought to Penang by its Cantonese immigrants, are small bite-sized treats that are usually served as three or four pieces per order and shared family style, along with a cup of hot tea.  A typical example is steamed buns stuffed with  chicken, pork, prawns, or vegetables.  These stuffings may be wrapped in large rice noodles as well.  In addition to these, many restaurants offer plates of roasted meats, steamed green vegetables, rice porridge, or more exotic dishes such as marinated and steamed duck or chicken feet, which are highly prized by the locals.  There are many Dim Sum restaurants in Penang and most have large tables that seat eight or more.  Don’t be surprised if others join you at a table, during peak hours.  The  photo on the right was taken at the Yee Heong Restaurant on Campbell street and is one of our favorite Dim Sum restaurants.

About the Authors

Photographer George Edward Giunca, and his Thai wife, Apisatha, have traveled around Thailand armed with a circular fisheye lens to create a photo essay on the rich cultural diversity, and abundant natural beauty of the Kingdom of Thailand. Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collection of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
