Happy Coronation Day 2014!
Today, May 5, is Coronation Day in Thailand. The first Coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej took place on May 5, in 1950. His Majesty is the ninth King of the Chakri Dynasty, and during His reign, the ceremony has usually been performed over three days.
วันฉัตรมงคล เป็นวันที่ระลึกในการครบรอบปี ที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชทรงรับพระบรมราชาภิเษก เป็นพระมหากษัตริย์แห่งประเทศไทยโดยสมบูรณ์ กล่าวคือ พระองค์ได้เสด็จขึ้นครองราชสมบัติต่อจากสมเด็จพระบรมเชษฐาธิราช พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวอานันทมหิดล เมื่อวันที่ 9 มิถุนายน พ.ศ.2489 แล้วเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงศึกษาอยู่ ณ ทวีปยุโรป จนกระทั่งทรงบรรลุนิติภาวะ แล้วจึงได้เสด็จนิวัติประเทศไทย และรัฐบาลไทย ได้น้อมเกล้าฯ จัดพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกถวาย เมื่อวันที่ 5 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.2493 ทั้งนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงมีพระปฐมบรมราชโองการ ในพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกนั้นว่า “เราจะครองแผ่นดินโดยธรรม เพื่อประโยชน์สุขแห่งมหาชนชาวสยาม” เหล่าพสกนิกรชาวไทยได้ถือเอาวันที่ 5 พฤษภาคมของทุกปี เป็นวันฉัตรมงคลรำลึก
I was not aware of this, or the exact procedures, so I will quote from the sources listed below, that have already been approved for accuracy. “On the first day, May 3, the king performs a merit-making ceremony at the Audience Hall of Amarindra Vinitchai in dedication to the deceased kings while Buddhist monks chant, give a sermon and perform a requiem on the royal ashes of the deceased kings.
On May 4, the Coronation Ceremonies begin with the proclamation of the Coronation Day read by the Chief of Brahmin priests followed by an evening chanting performed by Buddhist monks. Finally, May 5, the main day of the ceremony in which food is to be offered to monks and followed by a celebration of the Royal Regalia. At noon the Army and Navy fire a 21-gun salute in honor of the king. On this day, His Majesty the King also presents the royal decorations to the people who have made a valuable contribution to the country.”
ขั้นตอนการจัดงานวันฉัตรมงคลในรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช ได้ทรงประกอบพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกตามแบบอย่างโบราณ กำหนดให้เป็น 3 วัน ดังนี้
วันที่ 3 พฤษภาคม มีงานบำเพ็ญพระราชกุศลทักษิณานุปทาน คือ พิธีทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้แก่พระบรมราชบุพการี ซึ่งเป็นพิธีสงฆ์ ณ พระที่นั่งอมรินทรวินิจฉัย ซึ่งในวันนี้ได้เพิ่มพระราชพิธีตรึงหมุดธงชัยเฉลิมพลที่จะพระราชทานแก่หน่วยทหารบางหน่วยเข้าไว้ด้วย
วันที่ 4 พฤษภาคม เป็นวันเริ่มพระราชพิธีฉัตรมงคล เจ้าพนักงานจะได้อัญเชิญเครื่องราชกกุธภัณฑ์ ขึ้นประดิษฐานบนแท่นใต้พระมหาปฎลเศวตฉัตร พระครูหัวหน้าพราหมณ์อ่านประกาศพระราชพิธีฉัตรมงคล แล้วทรงสดับพระสงฆ์เจริญพระพุทธมนต์
วันที่ 5 ซึ่งเป็นวันฉัตรมงคล พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปถวายภัตตาหารแด่พระสงฆ์ ทรงบูชาเครื่องราชกกุธภัณฑ์ พราหมณ์เบิกแว่นเวียนเทียนสมโภชพระมหาเศวตฉัตรและเครื่องราชกกุธภัณฑ์ และช่วงเย็นพระราชทานเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์จุลจอมเกล้าแก่ผู้มีความดีความชอบ แล้วเสด็จนมัสการพระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากรและถวายบังคมพระบรมรูปสมเด็จพระบูรพมหากษัตริยาธิราชเจ้าที่ปราสาทพระเทพบิดร เป็นเสร็จพระราชพิธี

Since we’ve been talking about coins for the last few Thai blog posts, and in honor of the day, we’d like to show the obverse side of six Thai coins that are currently in circulation. We’ve already mentioned the names of the various artists that designed and sculpted these coins, so let’s take a minute to look at the coins. As you can see, I’ve also included a few older coins that show His Majesty earlier in his reign. Notice how the older metals seemed to hold more detail, and in fact, even though they are older and well circulated, there is still lots of detail to observe. also, these coins show a split-profile view, whereas the others show a profile view. All of the coins have beautiful texture in the hair, beautiful contouring, and some of the coins have very real looking eyes. I wonder how many of us really appreciate these small art masterpieces that we carry in our pocket? I’ve enjoyed the challenge of photographing these coins, and I hope we can get a set in mint condition to photograph soon.
