Money Mandalas in Myanmar

The Kathein Festival, in Myanmar, is a month-long celebration that begins after Vassa, the three month rainy season retreat for Theravada Buddhist monks, on the full moon of the 11th month on the Lunar calendar.

During this time, villagers collect money donations to repair their local temple, and buy necessities to give to monks. Some of the collected banknotes are attached to small tree branches to form “money trees”, while others are folded into colorful money mandalas, as seen here.

Stare at the center of this mandala for a few seconds. ~ Does it seem to spin counter-clockwise to you, or did I have too much coffee again??
