A Behind the Scenes Look at Some of the Landscape Photos in Thailand 180º (ภาพภูมิทัศน์)

If you’re like me, when you think of Thailand, you probably think of temples, Buddha Images, beaches and spicy food, but the Kingdom has many beautiful national parks and other points of interest.
Mor Hin Khao, or Thai Stonehenge in the Phu Laenkha National Park, located in Chaiyaphum, a province in the Northeast of Thailand is one of my favorite free sites. This rock formation is over 12′ tall and is made of, siltstone, mudstone, and purple and white sandstone. I knew when I saw it that it was “made to photograph with a fisheye lens.” The halo around the sun really added to the prehistoric feel of the area.

Phu Phrabat Historical Park in Udon Thani, also highly recommended, is an important place of pilgrimage for Isaan people. The park not only features rock formations, balanced rocks, spires, rocks the size of whales and caves with prehistoric paintings, but also has some scenic hiking trails with great views. Many of the formations are related to an old local legend involving a king named, Phaya Kong Phan, his beautiful daughter named, Nong Usa and a hermit, called, “The Story of Nong Usa and Tao Baros.” The image above shows a modified rock formation, called Ho Nang Usa, that Phaya Kong Phan reputedly forced his daughter to live in, in order to protect her. Many other formations have been used for religious rituals since ancient times, when the Mon, and later, Khmer people occupied this area.

The image above shows another collaboration between man and nature. Buddha Mountain, or Khao Chi Chan in Pattaya in the Chonburi Province, is a LASER carved Buddha image that is 109 meters high by 70 meters wide, and filled with a gold colored metal. It is visible on the horizon from miles away, making it exciting to visit. Although at first, I walked close to the mountain and filled the frame with the Buddha Image, I later found this angle that shows it’s reflection in the water. The image above is of Lalu, in the Ta Phraya National Park in the Sa Kaeo Province. The name comes from a Khmer word which means “penetrated” and describes the water and wind erosion as well as the soil collapse responsible for these wonderful, though somewhat diminutive formations. The small scale of Lalu, makes for some excellent photography possibilities, but unfortunately, the park closes at 4 pm, just as the light is starting to get nice. We almost didn’t get to photograph the sight at all, due to several days of heavy rain, but around 2 pm on the second day, it cleared long enough to visit. I like the way the images turned out since I was able to use the sun as a design element. Often landscape photography is mainly sky photography.

One more enjoyable part of visiting this park is the rare chance to ride in a “rot e-gong,” or two-wheel tractor. This “tractor” is so important for Esaan people as it changes into many things, from an irrigation pump, to plow, or family car. My wife made a short movie of our visit which I’ve posted below. I suggested the Dvořák symphony as a soundtrack with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek.
